EDITORIAL NOTE
IT AIN'T EASY BEING SLEAZY
The CHERI staff sure was happy to see that Indiana law has finally let up some
and returned to the policy of allowing entertainers to perform in the nude. That's right, this year's Ponderosa Sun Club's Nudes-A-Poppin' festival—the highlight of which is the ever-popular Miss Nude Galaxy Contest—marked the first time
in four years that the performers were permitted to do their acts all-nude.
Going back a-ways, the Ponderosa (located in Roselawn, Indiana) has been a quiet,
low-profile nudist colony, which, twice a year, hosts its Nudes-A-Poppin' festivals,
which CHERI has traditionally covered. The girls—mostly strippers from the
Midwest and sometimes Canada—appeared completely nude during their acts
and while wandering around between performances. There was never a problem and
these shows were extremely popular with audiences, who came from near and far,
armed with cameras. Visitors were even encouraged to photograph the contestants,
who, after their acts, would parade around and pose on wooden stands for the appreciative
crowds.
A little ways down the road, the Ponderosa's Roselawn neighbor, Naked City, was
having "image problems." It was said that things were going on there
that the law didn't approve of. Naked City was harassed and forced to close down,
later going through a period of reopenings under different names and different
management. To help curb what they felt were "indiscretions," Indiana
lawmakers prohibited total nudity in clubs. Although the Ponderosa had never posed
any problems whatsoever, for the sake of consistency under the law, it, too, could
no longer permit total nudity during its festivals.
For about three summers, the Ponderosa contestants had to strut their stuff in
G-strings and—this is the ridiculous part—because the girls couldn't
completely expose their nipples, they had to wear clear-colored bandages wrapped
around their nipples. It was okay for their areolas (the areas around the nipple)
to be bare, but they had to cover the actual tittie-ball. Well, after a while,
the crowds that used to come to the festivals thinned out and things just weren't
the same.
Well, nudity's in again! We're happy to tell you that the Nudes-A-Poppin' festival
of 1990 was the first show since '86 to allow total nudity—and my, are we
glad of it! The results of the show can be seen in our pictorial, photographed
