EDITOR'S PIECE
By now many of you may have heard of the bookkeeping law that affects all adult
video production, gay and straight (and bestial, according to the law's text).
Uncle Sam has decided, in an effort to help us protect ourselves and our children,
that the industry must maintain on file model releases and IDs of every performer
in every production made. Haven't we been doing this all along? Yes, but the new
law makes this even more pervasive by forcing not only the producers to comply,
but also everyone else involved, such as video editors, photographers, and yes,
even magazine publishers. SKINFLICKS must now keep on file a release and ID for
every model who appears in the magazine, even though these files already exist
with the video's producer. Sounds like a lot of extra work and expense? You bet!
Laws like this serve only one purpose: making videos even more difficult to produce.
Studios are being raided and shut down for not having every piece of paperwork
available on demand. Trees are being killed by the thousands just for release
and ID reproduction. A typical copy of SKINFLICKS now generates more than 700
additional sheets of paper just to maintain the paperwork this law requires! And
those 700 sheets have to be kept on file indefinitely! Also, the cost of keeping
these records, and reproducing them for every publication in which their photographs
are shown, is putting some smaller studios out of business. The added expense
that the new law imposes is just too much of a financial burden. And, that's exactly
what the government wants!
What does this mean to you? It means fewer companies making fewer videos, just
so they can keep their costs down. It could also mean more pricey videos as the
studios attempt to offset their additional expenses. All in all, a pretty serious
situation.
The record-keeping law is supposed to protect studios against unknowingly using
minors in their videos. But it's pretty obvious what the real intent is. But,
whatever obstacles they throw our way, we as an industry can't—and won't—
back down.
