EDITOR'S PIECE
It's a dirty job, but someone's got to do it. Being a reviewer, I mean. Don't get me wrong. I love my job; it's just that a lot of people don't love me for it!
It seems there are differing opinions on what a review magazine is all about. Readers, I would imagine, expect to find unbiased and informed opinions about a video so that they can decide whether or not to rent and/or buy it. That, and of course, to look at all the pretty pictures!
Production companies, on the other hand, are looking for publicity. They get free advertising, and in some cases, a full-page, full-color ad (worth about $15000-0) for providing a video and slides (which is what a magazine wants in order to provide its content). All in all, a pretty equitable arrangement. Video company gets free publicity, magazine gets great content, and the reader gets hot pictures. Sounds pretty good.
The problem, however, creeps in when the magazine has to assert its purpose — that of being a review magazine. If we were simply a venue through which the companies get publicity, we really wouldn't provide our stated objective. So, we write the reviews. If they're positive ones, things are still okay. But, and it happens occasionally, if the review is a negative one, the publicity the video gets is no longer a positive one, and the companies get all bent out of shape, and we get yelled at. Some companies even threaten to stop sending their videos and "cut us off." Does this really happen? Of course it does! Is what we're doing right? Of course, it is!
There is a microcosm in this industry in which we all try to support one another. This is almost necessary due to the continuous onslaught our industry suffers from ultra-conservative rightists trying to take away our right to enjoy adult entertainment. There is also, however, a responsibilty a magazine has to its readers, and that is to deliver unbiased and informed information. We cannot waver from that, and if it means an occasional slamming of a video when it is rightfully deserved, then that's the way it has to be.
It is never our intent to unjustly slander a company, or to lash out out at a video just to be vindictive. It troubles us when studios believe this to be true. There are, in fact, large studios who will remove reviewers from their lists just because of a bad review. This is ridiculous! Studios need to understand that not everything they produce is going to be golden. If they have the right to charge upwards of $50 to $80 for a video, then we have the right to challenge when the the quality is not up to reasonable standards. There are times when we just want to scream "grow up!" at these people. We all have our assigned roles in this industry, and an obligation to hold to them. We are all professionals here!
We want SKINFLICKS to be a respected source of information and reviews. For that to be true, we need to write what we believe in, no matter how it may upset the videos' producers. We hope that you find SKINFLICKS to be fair and impartial. We go through a pretty rigourous screening here to check ourselves out, and we strongly feel we're doing the right thing.
We hope you enjoy this latest issue. We had fun putting it together! And we aren't going to apologize for anything!
