EDITOR'S NOTE
It has been almost a quarter of a century-since-NUMBERS magazine Naae-launched-right
here in Hialeah, Florida. It had quickly followed on the heels of BLUEBOY magazine
which was first published a couple of years before, to great critical acclaim
in the gay community.
Although today, one can find almost any type of gay magazine to fit one's taste
in almost any area, from arts to theater, to fashion andnaturally-to naked men.
Things weren't so back in 1976. Movies were still 8mm underground films, traded
and sold surreptitiously in secret. Books and magazines - the real naughty ones,
that is - were smuggled from Europe. There were a few gay adult magazines around,
but of very poor quality and content. And those of us out in the boonies had to
settle for "Tomorrow's Mane or "Sunshine & Health-," the first,
a modest Dart" magazines featuring handsome young men in artistic poses,
wearing bathing suits or posing straps and the second a nudist magazine where,
if you were lucky, you might find one faded photo of a guy showing his penis-one
that had escaped the censor's sharp eye.
NUMBERS and BLUEBOY were different. They were artistic (a little more so than
we'd care to see today.) They were classy - as class was defined almost 25 years
ago - but, here's where the revolutionary change comes in-they were raunchy! They
showed naked young men! They showed erect penises! They showed our naked male
bodies in all their glory-in color:And, they contained intelligent articles and
- Columns and stories promoting gay rights, self-esteem, the power of the gay
dollar and such. Not only was the country shocked, but they were outraged.
But the editor/publisher held fast, defending the magazines by citing the fact
that there were adult magazines for straight men, showing naked women in all sorts
of poses, and so why shouldn't there be intelligent adult magazines containing
nudity for gays?
Over the years, the magazines titles were sold. They were published out of New
York City for a number of years and for some reason, although they survived, they
never achieved the look and the glory of their halcyon days in Florida. Then,
a couple of years ago, the titles were purchased by The Princeton Media"-Croup,
which was determined to restore these two magazines to their original stature.
Two months ago, the magazines were transferred to this division, ironically located
in Hialeah, Florida-the birthplace of them both.
Welcome home, boys! And now a message for all of you readers:
It is our promise to make NUMBERS magazine (and BLUEBOY) two of the best, hottest,
raunchiest and most intelligent gay magazines in the world:-There will be reading
that will-not insult your intelligence-articles that will inform, educate, enlighten
and titillate. And, most important of all, there will be the hottest men, with
the best bodies and the biggest dicks you've ever seen, many of them never-before-published.
NUMBERS is for you guys who like 'em young, tough, streetwise and hung, and that's
what you'll be seeing in this and future issues. And the way we'll succeed is
by you buying this magazine, telling your friends about it, spreading the word,
and becoming faithful readers. Tell us what you want. Tell us when you're happy
with us, when you're disappointed and when you have a good idea to make us better.
We promise we'll listen!
