EDITOR'S PIECE
When SKINFLICKS editor Gary Philipp contacted me with the idea for this issue
— where we would have the people who make the movies actually review them
— I was reminded of the saying, "beware when the inmates take over
the asylum!"
Having so often been irritated with what has been written about my videos, I readily
agreed to his proposition. Only then did I realize that this might be part of
a deep and insidious plan. What if, in an effort to show us (the video producers)
how tough he and his fellow reviewers' jobs were, he was going to let us sink
or swim? Well, Gary, this little salmon is swimming upstream to lay his eggs,
and you can be sure that you've got me hook, line and sinker!
This issue will provide you, the reader/porn viewer with a different perspective
on the adult industry. You will see the business from "the inside,"
our collective points of view. For example, often when you read a video review,
it is written to advance the career of the writer, not to constructively critique
the video. In this issue, all the principal reviews are written by people who
direct videos, so you can see what it is we look for and what we ultimately notice.
Oh and yes, to answer one of the questions I am most frequently asked, I still
watch videos just like you do. Oh what the hell, let the truth be told here for
the first time: No matter what we as directors say to each other's faces, we all
check out each other's work, which is one reason why I am so familiar with all
of the guest reviewers. Now while it is true that familiarity does breed contempt,
Gary, your erstwhile editor, has wisely chosen a group who I believe can all "constructively"
play together nicely. (And if not, just think folks, you will be present for the
beginning of Bitch Fest '97!)
Just think of us directors as a deck of cards. With that in mind, let me introduce
you to some of the players in this month's issue. Drawing high card, we have:
ACE: John Rutherford (Falcon Studios)
Falcon is quite simply the best. Period. John Rutherford is left with the unenviable
job of surpassing himself and the falcon reputation with each new production.
If anyone is up to it, it's John. Did I mention he is as cute as the models he
shoots? — no, really!
KINGS: Steven Scarborough & Mark Baxter (Hot House Entertainment) John Travis (Studio 2000)
• Steven Scarborough was the driving force at Falcon for years and this
ability is showcased when you look at his amazing video, "The Road Home."
On a seamier note, you can also can see some of the hottest raw sex around if
you check out his Plain Wrapped Series. Now, I'm not saying that these titles
are hard to get, but I, a friend who has personally raved to at least three reviewers
and is now using this editorial page to once again sing the praises of these titles,
still can't get any free tapes! Come on, Steven, you cheap fuck, fork some over!
If you are into heavy ass-play, it doesn't get any better than this!
• John Travis. "One Hot Summer" — what more can you say?
This man consistently brings you videos which introduce you to exquisite models
who work exclusively for him. Does the name Rick Chase mean anything to you? All-American
guys and action at its finest.
THE UNDISPUTED QUEEN: Chi-Chi LaRue (Mustang Video, Catalina Video & All Worlds
Video)
-e makes videos, a lot of videos, some good, some great. He wins awards, a lot
of awards. Unfortunately, most of you will never get to know the special person
that he is, so trust me, our business is better for him being in it. I am proud
to call him my friend.
ONE-EYED JACK: Josh Elliot (Catalina Video)
.:sh Eliot has changed the look of Catalina forever. Josh is not afraid to shoot
men who mirror the times. He was one of the first to shoot guys whose ass-: es
were not shaved, not to mention models sporting tattoos. You know, guys who look
like the ones we actually meet. Did I mention that a nicer man will never know?
JACK: Mike Donner (All Worlds Video)
A e met at Chi-Chi La Rue's birthday bash. At that time I believe that he had
made approximately eight videos. He tackles subject matter that is cutting edge,
xnng and pushes the boundaries of the adult video medium.
While this is in no way a complete listing of all the players in our industry,
at least now when you are reading this issue, you will be on a more level 7e,ing
