As a sexually explicit magazine, Stallion, like so many others of its kind, has often had to battle for its right to be distributed. Now, thanks to Attorney General Meese's Commission on Pornography, new pressures have been brought to
bear on retailers, to discourage the sales of "adult" or "sophisticated" publications. Here at Stallion, we have long warned that censorship is a pernicious disease which spreads faster than cancer. If you haven't believed us before, listen to this: Now, the Commission has written to various drug store and convenience store chains, warning (or is it threatening?) them that as retailers of certain magazines, they were "involved in the sale or distribution of pornography," and that their names would be publicly noted in the Commission Report. Among the "pornographic" periodicals listed was Playboy.
Playboy!
Come on, now. To most red-blooded American boys — gay or straight —
Playboy has been as much a part of the American Way as Coca Cola, / Love Lucy,
The National Enquirer, and Trojans. What's going to happen when right-minded
groups decide that the Sugar and caffeine in Coke are detrimental to our citizenry? How soon will it be before someone finds apple pie, Mom, and the American flag to be subversive?
Although 4500 7-Eleven stores have capiTulated to Mr. Meese's letter and removed Playboy from their shelves (not to mention Penthouse, Gallery, Playgirl, and Genesis), there is still some hope for freedom of the press. The Circle K Corporation (with nearly 3500 stores in twenty-five states) did not buckle. Instead, they took a survey and found that 84% of their customers had no objection to the sales of such magazines.
Arm yourself with these statistics and tell your straight friends. You might
also want to quote them the words of Pastor Martin Niemoeller in his 1945 speech
before the Council of Evangelical Churches:
"In Germany, the Nazis first came for the Communists, and I didn't speak
up, became I was not a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not
speak up, because I was not a Jew. Then they came for the Unionists, and I did
not speak up because I was not a Unionist. Then they came for the Catholics,
and I was a Protestant, so I didn't speak up. Then they came for me. By that
time, there was no one left to speak up for anyone."
