EDITORIAL NOTE
In many underdeveloped and/or overpopulated countries where the economy is precarious,
such as Asia, Russia, India and Africa, women turn to prostitution as one of the
better and more reliable ways of making a living. Often, they are the sole support
of not only their children, but their parents and other relatives. For instance,
according to report in The New York Times, Pushpa Das, a 30-year-old prostitute
in the Sonagachi red-light district of Calcutta, earns $50 per month, while in
her previous job as a maid she earned $10 per month, which afforded her family
only one meal per day. Now because she is a prostitute, they can live better.
In addition, Ms. Das is part of a unique program funded by the British government,
which pays 180 Songachi prostitutes $1 dollar per day to spread the word about
AIDS and condoms. The women, wearing distinctive medical jackets over their saris,"
have been successful in converting not only their sister hookers but also brothel
owners to their "no condoms, no sex" policy-after convincing women not
to work for places that allow customers unprotected sex.
Condom usage in Sonagachi has soared from 3% in 1992 to 90% in 1998, and now the
Indian government plans an all-out battle against AIDS, "waged from red-light
district to red-light district, across the vastness of this country of almost
a billion people. The hope is that if India acts swiftly, while the overall infection
rate is less than 1 percent of the population, it can avoid the horrific burden
of death that afflicts Africa."
We applaud the courageous women of Sonagachi who are leading the battle against
a disease which in other red-light districts is spread by prostitutes instead
of stopped by them. It just goes to show that, in spite of our pathetically narrow-minded
and outdated Puritan ethic, there is nothing intrinsically wrong with "the
world's oldest profession." It not only provides pleasure to many paying
customers, which in turn provides a living to many women and their dependents,
but it can also be a positive force to stop sexually-transmitted disease rather
than cause it!
I'm asking you all to join forces with the hooker heroines of Sonagachi and slip
one on before you slip it in!
