EDITORIAL
1996 has been a roller coaster year for the adult entertainment industry at large, and AVN has followed and commented on it all. Politically, the Religious Right continued its practice of offering "stealth" candidates for election, including the Republican and a few minority-party presidential nominees, while the Democratic incumbent seems willing to hold the First Amendment line against critics right and left.
However, more and more towns across America, driven by misinformation and fear, are passing restrictive speech and zoning laws in an effort to keep "the blight of pornography" from infecting their hamlets - even when no one seems to want to open an adult business for miles.
Adult manufacturers have been working overtime to supply the demand for XXX product. We could easily finish the year with over 7800 adult tapes released and AVN's mission is to review as many of them as we can, while keeping our eyes open for new companies, new lines, new stars and new trends. If something is happening in the adult video industry that will affect your sales, look to AVN to report on it.
Electronically, the internet has taken the place of CD-ROMs as the hot topic. Many adult companies have their own websites, as do many of the stars, allowing net surfers to interact with their favorites and get information on new products and services lightning-fast. Sexy CD-ROM games are still a hot commodity, though the transfer market is nearly dead, with digitized video almost always now accompanied by a game or two to make them more interesting. Also strong are interactive video booths in retail stores, as well as new electronic gimmicks for existing viewing booths (with or without doors). AVN is committed to covering all these developments.
Here at home, AVN itself has undergone major changes. We've hired new staff, new writers, new artists, and moved to larger quarters to hold them all. We've started a companion newsstand magazine, Sexpose, and are turning out supplements on the topics you want to see -"Hardwares" are particularly popular - just about every month.
We're still here to give you the most complete, accurate information available on every aspect of the adult industry, We've added 500 feature titles to bring our list up to a massive Top 2000, with over 40 "Editor's Choices" covered pictorially. CD-ROM, Specialty and Gay & Bi have seen proportionately increased listings over last year. Amateur companies are fewer this year, but we cover them all. We've also included a History of the AVN Awards from their inception, so retailers can easily pickwhich classics to stock, and a Top Hardwares section for those who want to expand or improve their novelty sections.
AVN's Adult Entertainment Video Guide (also known in the business as the "Buyers Guide") remains the source for retailers trying to locate adult products and services, and we've added several new companies this year. Our Charting the Adult Industry remains the reference source for information on both the industry and the buying public. Its figures have been used and quoted throughout the year by mainstream journalists seeking to understand this "adult" phenomenon, about which they have few clues.
Why do we do this? So that you, the video retailers, will never again have to buy an adult tape without knowing just what you're getting for your money. With the enormous number of XXX titles available, profitability of video stores which carry adult can often hinge on knowing just what trends are most popular with consumers, and which tapes fill that bill. AVN delivers the lowdown, the inside story and the scoop on both of these crucial issues.
So keep this year's guide handy, near your store's computer/register, and why not hang a copy on the wall so customers can use it to help decide whit to buy or rent? They'll thank you for helping them find just the right tape to turn them on and hey, if you want to thank us, you know the address.
