Adult manufacturers have been working overtime to supply the demand for XXX _
product. We could easily finish the year with over 8000 adult tapes released -
and . . AVN's mission is to review every one of them (excluding compilations),
while eeping our eyes open for new companies, new lines, new stars and new trends.
If something happening in the adult video industry that will affect your sales,
look to AVN to report on it.
Electronically, the Internet continues to gain power and accessibility, with dozens
of adultriented Web sites being added, it seems, every day. Many adult companies
have their own ,ebsites, as do many of the stars, allowing net surfers to interact
with their favorites and get iformation on new products and services lightning-fast.
AVN's own Web site <www.avn.com> ontinues to improve, with new features
being added on a regular basis.
DVD has taken the place of CD-ROM as the hot new medium, and several companies
are ,earing up for regular DVD production. Sexy CD-ROM games are still being produced,
albeit t a much slower pace, but the transfer market seems to have completely
disappeared. AVN is ommitted to covering all these developments.
You hold in your hands the largest annual AVN Adult Video Entertainment Guide
ever - 516 )ages. We've added 500 feature titles to our Top 2000, with nearly
50 "Editor's Choices" coy-!red pictorially in The Best of 1997, and
several "Spotlights" within the Top 2000 covering the ,eries and directors
you want to know more about. To make room, we've created a new section itled Classics
of the AVN Era, with capsule reviews of the best features we've reviewed from
1983 (the year AVN began) to 1990. We've also supplied dates for all our reviews
to help retail?rs better select stock their customers will want to buy or rent.
Other sections have seen proportionately increased listings over last year, with
more cate;ories in our Specialty section to help you more accurately meet your
customers' needs. Amateur does pretty well for most stores. We cover all the companies
here. We've also included a History of the AVN Awards from their inception, so
retailers can easily pick which classics to stock, and a Best Hardwares section
for those who want to expand or improve their novelty section. And our star Fan
Club listings return after a year's hiatus.
AVN's Buyers Directory remains the source for retailers trying to locate adult
products and services, and we've added dozens of new companies this year. Our
Charting the Adult Industry section remains the reference source for information
on both the industry and the buying public, and this year, we've made it easier
to read. Our figures have been used and quoted throughout the year by mainstream
journalists seeking to understand this "adult" phenomenon about which
they have few clues.
Why do we do this? So that you, the video retailers and consumers, will never
again have to buy an adult tape without knowing just what you're getting for your
money. With the enormous number of XXX titles available, profitability of video
stores which carry adult can often hinge on knowing just what trends are most
popular with consumers, and which tapes fill that bill.
So keep this year's guide handy, near your store's computer/register, and why
not hang a copy on the wall so customers can use it to help decide what to buy
or rent? They'll thank you for helping them find just the right tape to turn them
on... and hey, if you want to thank us, the address is at the bottom of the right
hand column.
