The only way the West Coast is geared-up t to the possibility of earthquakes
is psychologically. Most new structures feature "quake-resistant"
designs, but Californian building codes remain pitifully ;lax, allowing, for
example, buildings to be constructed directly along fault lines. In Los Angeles
and San Francisco, the annual ;budget for possible earthquake emergencies is
laughably inadequate. It's i just a matter of who'll be left alive to see the joke. By comparison, Mid-Westerners tend not to even consider the possibility of a quake, despite the proximity of the New Madrid fault and the quakes of 1811-1812. Well, there's certainly something to be said for this apparent "ignorance is bliss" philosophy, because the vast majority of Missouri buildings have no resistance to earthquakes whatsoever. See this month's lead for your earthquake survival guide. Just may be you need it ,sooner than you think. Roger Sewell
