EDITORIAL
THE SLEUTHSAYER

"I love women in rock 'n' roll," shouts singer/actress Sandra Bernhard {uncovered in our last issue}. "Belinda Carlisle—she's hot land she heats up pages 92-3 inside}. It's obvious that women in rock 'n' roll are manipulative sex appeal, but it's all marketed very well and it works."It works for us...
As one leading X-ponent of musical musk, Gail Johnson of the Skirtz, explains: "I like being sexy and I don't apologize for it. When you come down to it, what's sexier than rock 'n' roll? My band's not justtits-and-ass, but what we do onstage is seduce the audience. That's what it's all about."
And that's what this 35th issue of CELEBRITY SLEUTH is all about: our long-awaited encore to the "Women of Rock" we rhapsodized over in our third issue. Since then, we've featured scores of sexy singers in a variety of issues rIngenudes," "Readers' Choice," "25 Sexiest").. Still, as you know, we do take requests...and there's been a steady chorus of vocal readers chanting for a volume devoted solely for soulyito "Throats of Note."
Since we're clearly in concert, I chose to call this collection of greatest hits "Top 40"—not because it contains Dolly Parton and Samantha Fox, but rather to denote the number of foxy flesh tones we've grouped on center stage. Also, as my hometown Washington Post recently remarked: "For generations, Top 40 radio, with its nationwide audience, provided a soundtrack for people's lives. The whole revolution behind Top 40, the principle behind it, was that people wanted to hear the most popular records with some degree of frequency so that when they tuned in, they had a good chance of hearing their favorite song, or lots of them." As we've visualized the concept, seeing is believing!
"As the Eighties began," pop music maven Nick Tosches noted, "the queens of rock 'n' roll, low-cut and strapless or booted and gloved, seething sex as never before...held the cocks of young America in their long-nailed fingers, squeezing harder as the music got louder." As the Nineties continue, Sleuth gives them the chance to really loosen their lungs.
"There used to be great Top 40 wars here," laments a D.C. deejay. "It's really strange not to have a true Top 40 station in the Nation's Capital. It's a great format and it's sad, because there really should be one." And now there is...
Glad We're in Harmony!
