THE SLEUTHSAYER
"Planning to welcome the New Year with a song?" People recently probed.
"Looking for just the right number? Something...millennial?" Well, Cher
is not quite a thousand yet, but she's been resurrected by her smash single Believe
(we believe those are her nipples on p. 12). "She ruled TV with the Sonny
& Cher show in the '70s and won an Oscar in the '80s," Teen Celebrity
raves. "Now, as the Millennium approaches, she's hitting the dance floor."
And Sleuth is hitting the shelves...
Our singers sin•tennial is our SIXTH songbird salute, starring MTVixens
and VH-wonders galore! "Every time you turn around these days someone is
talking. about Women in Rock," gay Girlfriends magazine muses. "But
when it comes to women in rock, reading about them is a pale imitation of the
real thing (seeing, however, is believing). Clit rock rules," Girlfriends
grouses, "but new books can't do it justice." That's where the Sleuth
mag comes in...
As we near this millennial milestone, a bit of history is order: Some may not
realize that rock-and-roll was, after all, slang for sex—it derives from
a 1922 record called "My Daddy Rocks Me with One Steady Roll," by the
sexy blues singer Trixie Smith. And the first rock 'n' roll record to cross overfrom
traditionally black rhythm & blues to the mainstream pop charts was 1951's
ode to sexual staying power, "Sixty Minute Man" by the Dominoes. One
of hourfavorites (we wish!) was a 1935 blues ballad recorded by Bessie Jackson,
entitled "Shave 'Em Dry." The lyrics (we kid you' not) begin: I got
nipples on my titties/Big as the ends of my thumbs. I got somethin"tween
my legs/That'll make a dead man come.
And the hits have kept on coming: in the past year Billboard has bulleted such
titles as Invasion of the Flat Booty Bitches, Prick Your Imagination, Funkgasm,
The Best of Foreplay (by a string quartet yet!) and the ever-soulful Black Vagina
Finders. Chart-topping group names include Big Muff, Cherry Poppin' Daddies (good
thing the late, great Phyllis Hyman, V9 N3, was spared that!), 69 Boyz and Australia's
all-girl Cherry. Not to mention Sleuth's solo reason for being: Barenaked Ladies.
And we've got lots: from LIL' to HILL (Kim and Lauryn); (Sheryl) CROW to ROBYN;
and (Deborah) COX to PUSSY (Nashville). Why, even the {Shanial TWAIN we'll meet...
So, as our hundredth issue approaches...and ten hundred annums elapse...we hope
our final folio of the century will rock your world. And may your Millennium truly
be...GRAND.
A Thousand Thanks,
