THE SLEUTHSAYER
"Like a plague," the Washington Post warns, "Hollywood's latest
moviemaking trend is casting its shadow across the landscape of the American cineplex:
the Teen Ensemble Movie. It is everywhere. Oh insidious youth. Or, as the trailer
from an upcoming teen knockoff puts it, 'There's something about...being young.'"
Hey, they may be on to something...
We've been "on it" for nearly fifteen years, but it's getting harder
{so to speak} to find fresh faces for our fourteenth "Rising Young Stars"
salute...simply because the girls are getting so "fresh." As jokester
Joe Queenan recently remarked: "Movie critics often lament the disappearance
of the ingEnue...that in her place we have an endless parade of Gretchen Mols
{who reigns third in our parade, on p. 10}. Yet the truth is, ingefnues have disappeared
from the screen because they have disappeared from real life. Today, the real
money is to be made playing sluts."
A trend typified by film critic Michael Angeli's "Triumph of the Tarts"
treatise in Movieline, which begins: "They come fully loaded, with catwalk
bodies and a pocketful of neverminds. They're sweater puppies yapping to be petted.
They stick out their flat bellies and temptation smolders under all that exposed
skin like unexploded ordnance. They sing 'hello' in three syllables and shed their
bras without being asked twice. They are tarts," Angeli acclqims, "rump-shaking,
eye-rolling, naughty girl actresses�born in the last quarter of the 20tn
century and ready to /icktheir way into the 21st." Or into our 144I...
On the set of her new teen flick, titled�wouldn't you know it�Tart,
17-year-old Party of Five lolita Lacey Chabert {little sister of ever-biggerJennifer
Love Hewitt, p. 8} complained: "The whole cast was young, and most of them
were drunk every night, running around the hotel high on something. But I have
no interest in that stuff. Guys have always told me that it's sexier to leave
a little to the imagination."
Especially in this Brave Nude World of web sights: "Today we are only one
