PUBLISHER'S STATEMENT
FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION
THE FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION IS FUNDAMENTAL TO THE PERSONAL LIBERTIES OF CANADIANS
AND IS SO ENSHRINED IN THE CANADIAN BILL OF RIGHTS.
These words should make every red-blooded Canadian sleep better at night, knowing
that his rights are being upheld. And if you believe that, then we've got another
proposition for you. How would you like to buy the Brooklyn Bridge?
But joking aside, we have a serious situation on our hands. Our rights as individuals
are being repressed and we are doing nothing, absolutely nothing, about it.
For instance, you should be concerned about:
(a) The action of the Minister of Transport, the Hon. Otto Lang, who suppressed
an issue of The Canadian magazine in the province of Saskatchewan simply because
he didn't like what was said about him in an article.
(b) The action of the Ontario Censor Board prohibiting the showing of the film
Pretty Baby. The rest of Canada was allowed to see this film which, incidentally,
has received world-wide acclaim as a masterpiece of cinematography, but the theme
was regarded as too sensitive. We contend that if Saturday Night Fever, which
contained more sucking and fucking per footage and which was seen by millions
of teenagers, could pass then so could Pretty Baby.
(c) The action of the Federal Government in prosecuting the Toronto Sun under
the Official Secrets Act. This is a definite instance of government interference
in legitimate media activity.
(d) The action of the Montreal courts to convict and sentence Peter Treu under
a complete cloak of secrecy. This secret trial threatens to drag our entire judicial
system into disrepute and has created an impression of injustice. The public must
be allowed to know that Peter Treu was treated fairly and this can only be gained
by an open trial.
(e) The action of numerous school boards in censoring certain books which have
been widely recognized over the years as being of high literary quality. Salinger's
Catcher in the Rye is one of the books under review, yet for many years it has
been on many students' curricula.
These are just a few of the repressive measures which are now in effect or are
being proposed by both federal and provincial legislators. Something must be done
to stop the trend towards repression and censorship in Canadian life. Otherwise
the principles of democracy, freedom and individual rights will be imperilled.
What can you do to alter the situation? Well, the first thing you've got to do
is get angry!
Then write to your local Member of Parliament and tell him or her exactly how
you feel about your rights as a Canadian being violated. The person you voted
into office is there to protect your rights. Make him work for you and don't take
no for an answer. Politicans are people but you are the people. Make our system
work!
