PUBLISHER'S STATEMENT
WE APOLOGIZE!
If you think publishing a magazine, especially a men's magazine, is easy —
forget it . . .
We encounter problems that the average man in the street knows nothing about.
However, we sometimes make mistakes. Because, after all, we're only hUmma-porn-star">Uman. So
we admit we goofed and we apologize for it.
In the April issue of Elite (Volume 5, Number 5 in Canada) we chickened out by
omitting a photograph on page 11 of the Canadian edition, and on pages 50 and
62 (also in the Canadian edition) we put in a black circle with the legend Banned
in Canada.
We did this because we were told by some authority that the photographs in their
original state would lead to the complete issue being banned from the newsstand.
Since that issue was distributed, we have received many phone calls and letters
from readers complaining about our treatment of the photography in the magazine.
And they had every right to be annoyed, because the self-imposed censorship was
an invasion of their rights as adults to read and view what they want and when
they want it.
We at Elite try to produce a magazine which is a cut above others in both frankness
and honesty. We have fought editorially and in the courts for the rights to produce
and distribute such a magazine and to make it available to any adult who wishes
to purchase it.
We have not stood on street corners with baseball bats telling passers by that
they must buy the magazine or else. We have left it to the the discriminating
reader to make his own choice.
But we shortchanged you . . . and we apologize.. Future issues of Elite magazines
will never again contain those dreaded black circles. This kind of self-censorship
is counter to everything we have fought for and is a backward step in our fight
for our rights as individuals. It is also an insult to your own personal rights.
You will never be shortchanged again!
