The other day I received a telephone call from an Elite wholesaler. He maintained
that people like himself are never given any credit for the success of a magazine.
And for once I had to agree with him.
Before I go on, I should explain the function of a mágazine wholesaler.
After a magazine is printed it goes to a national distributor. From there it goes
to a magàzine wholesaler who, in turn, distributes the magazine to the
retail stores in his area. There are approximately 500 wholesalers in the United
States and 35 in Canada.
Now this may seem like a simple procedure, but everybody involved, whether national
distributor, wholesaler or retailer, must do their job well to ensure the success
of a magazine.
These people are instrumental in getting the magazine to you, the reader.
It's very hard to single out one of them foi special praise, but I'd like to mention
the wholesaler. Because he is, in essence, a middleman he rarely gets any plaudits.
Probably because his role is usually understated. But credit is due to him, because
he holds the key to success. A wholesaler must ensure that the magazine gets to
retailers on a regular basis. He must also know how many should go to each store,
so you don't find that they're sold out when you go to your favorite newsstand.
As a reader, you might regard the whole business of distributing magazines as
mundane. But we hold the wholesaler in high regard, and we'd like to give him
the recognition that is his due.
Elite magazine is distributed in many different countries, and to all our wholesalers
