EDITORIAL NOTE
There's a likelihood that out of the current crop of sequels and remakes, some inevitably risk unflattering comparison to their precursors. One consequence of this trend is a dispiriting regression to the naked (vulnerable) lady who's deep-sixed in the shower. Yep, the PSYCHO remake kindled notoriety not only because of its conceit ("remaking" Hitchcock) but the debate over how the "shower scene" would be viscerally translated for the '90s: this stoked fierce philosophical speculation before the film debuted ("How naked...how bloodier than the boring 1960 version?').
If you prefer more polemical discussion about sex, death and femmes fatales, we
endorse the films of Jon Jacobs, a '90s director who has reformed women's roles in the horror cinema. Jacobs' movies are so anarchic that they've frustrated Hollywood.
His GIRL WITH THE HUNGRY EYES wasn't deja vu enough for its distributor, Columbia/Tristar Home Video. Marketed as an erotic thriller, the film was paradoxically categorized as a "drama": of course, the film subverted generic labeling. Based on a story by Fritz Leiber, the scenario involves a sensuous suicide victim resurrected as a vampire: sharing a symbiotic relationship with a decaying hotel, she chastises
sexual predators. Stung by his experience with the studio brass, Jacobs is personally promoting LUCINDA'S SPELL, his "witchcraft" movie: of course, Hollywood is more comfortable with the likes of PRACTICAL MAGIC, even though Jacobs' movie makes that crowd-pleaser look like an unsold Fox pilot. Suffice to say, Tinseltown's extravagance couldn't buy Jacob's aptitude for inexpensive, exotic filmmaking.

Well, Jenny and I are enjoying a repast (sake for me, Diet Pepsi for her). We've just returned from a FF cover shoot in N.J. (Jen posed as a kick-butt CD hellion: more next time). It was my first free "long" weekend in many a moon. Though intense, I needed the sleep and the laughs.
