PUBLISHER'S PAGE
After 54 issues of Gallery after four years of developing and shaping a magazine
that achieved a reputation for presenting important ideas and issues, and enticing
its readers with pictorial delights, editor and publisher Nils Shapiro reached
for a star hanging in the California sky.
Gallery will continue to reflect, and reflect on, the way America lives. And now
it's my task to continue to submit an entertainment that delights the senses and,
at the same time, refines sensibilities; that involves you with ideas but also
gives you practical solutions to help you function more effectively in your work
and play; that helps you enjoy what you have and offers pointers on living more
creatively; and that shows you the wealth of choices available to help you develop
your own distinctive style. And it is the sense of style that's most important—your
personal imprint on everything you do—that sets you apart from the vast
majority.
So there will be some changes coming in Gallery. But they will evolve slowly,
and come from the efforts of the ambitious and imaginative staff Nils Shapiro
assembled. Here are some of the things we'll be doing: making "The Girl Next
Door" feature more exhilarating and offering more generous prizes to the
winners; more on fashion, automobiles, wines, entertaining, the electronic circus—all
the elements of the good life; a monthly newsletter on the future which will provide
insights on developments and events likely to occur anywhere from six months to
20 years from now; and surveys of what America is thinking and feeling.
And on the subject of thinking and feeling ... The Kahn Report on Sexual Preferences,
published in our June issue, provoked a tempest among the staff. Author Sandra
S. Kahn had a nucleus that agreed with her findings, but many took exception to
her methods and observations. We will be tracking this controversy in a forthcoming
issue, but, in the meantime, I wonder how our readers express their own preferences.
So, take a few minutes and fill out the self-quiz and mail it to me. Don't write
your name and address, but clip out the test and mail it to:
