remember that $9 billion in federal aid went into inland water navigation between
1957 and 1976, while only $1.1 billion was spent on intercity passenger service
during that same period. And while public transportation meanders into new depths
of wretchedness, and archaic water systems for farmers and city dwellers are breaking
down, remember that as of this year there's a backlog of $34 billion worth of
water projects in the various federal agencies. One of the chief culprits is the

about bulldozers, they got the greatest Dillo down in Texas. It was a funny-looking
club, converted from an old armory building, in Austin, Texas. It dispensed the
best in beer, burritos, and bands. Van Morrison, the Charlie Daniels Band, and
Zappa-musician">Frank Zappa gained fame there. Linda Ronstadt, Marshall Tucker, and Leon Russell
put big bands on the Dillo stage. Ted Nugent and Ray Price appeared on the same
show. Bruce Springsteen followed Albert Crow, a country fiddle player. Willie
Nelson, Bette Midler, and Waylon Jennings discovered that the midpoint between
New York and Los Angeles was the crazy Dillo. New Yorker Suzanne Felzen went to
the closing-night bash on December 31, 1980, and captured the unique energy of
Dilloland. She tells us: "What really made the Armadillo great was the alchemical
mix of performers, staff, and musicians; people who, like many of us, drank too
much, had logged too many miles late at night, never got enough sleep, and for
whom music was life itself." AND THEN, SUMMER'S LAST GREAT BASH. In our bash, Tina Vaughn
dances in pink, P.T. Horn frolics in blue, and Cynthia Kunkle sizzles in red.
Brendon Kearns is with Tina, Joe Pilewski with Cynthia, and Julius Branca with
P.T. Tina has won an understudy role in the forthcoming film, The Best Little
Whorehouse in Texas. P.T. is studying with actors' workshops in New York in between
various modeling assignments and taking screen tests for a new 3-D film, Louisiana
Swamp Murders. Cynthia has modeled in the Boston Area for several years and has
just moved to New York. Brendon, born and bred in Brooklyn, lifeguards at Jacob
Riis Park in New York and is a model with the Barbizon Agency. Joe comes from
Ohio, he's also with Barbizon, has appeared in numerous TV and print ads, but
wants an acting career. Julius has appeared in a number of Off-Broadway productions
but is new to modeling.
Gallery combed the country to come up with its 1981 list of the greatest places
to have that last great fling of summer. And if there are any arguments—or
suggestions—let's hear them. In these pages, Gallery creates the moods that
