RIGHT UP FRONT CHINA ... UNIQUELY. Attorney, traveler, and entrepreneur S. Edward
Oren-stein recently spent several weeks touring mainland China. But instead of
the usual V.I.P. banquet-and-fancyhotel excursion, Orenstein chose to visit schools,
factories, farms, communes, homes, and small villages, as well as the big cities.
It was an unforgettable experience. Orenstein believes we underestimate China
as a phenomenal market for American products; he feels that we should look at
China as a business and cultural frontier. His observations on the average Chinese and how he lives, works, and plays may surprise you. The stirrings of this mighty dragon may even frighten you. One thing is certain: China will play an increasingly important role on the stages of world politics and economics. DEADLY DEALS. The entire nation went to war during World War
II—if you don't remember it, you certainly know about the heroic efforts
not only on battle lines around the world, but also about the incredible effort
of those Americans who stayed on these shores. Everybody united in one common
cause, correct? Not quite. When money talks, patriotism and sacrifice have a way
of walking out the door. Some of our largest corporations—Standard Oil and
Chase Manhattan Bank, to name just two—not only dealt with our ideological
enemies before we entered the war, but kept right on dealing with them even after
we entered the war and they became our literal enemies. The incontrovertibly documented
case is all laid out in Charles Higham's Trading with the Enemy, a new best-seller
from Delacorte Press which we excerpt in this isstt€. Higham may be familiar
to you. He came to fame when he disclosed some discoveries found while researching
his biography, Errol Flynn—that
Flynn not only sympathized with Nazism, but actually palled around with American
Nazi agents in this country. Higham finished that book, followed up more leads,
and found enough for Trading. More than enough. THE WRIGHT STORY. Please don't think we ran Peter Meinké
s "The Salon de the Sea" because it gave us an excuse to use Gallery
'New American Woman' Michelle Wright in the photo-illustration. We ran the short
story because it's splendid. Meinke recently won an O'Henry Award for publishing
one of the best stories in America during 1982, and we're betting he's got a good
chance with this one for this year. And we used Michelle in the artwork because
she's splendid, too. SEVEN-DAY WONDER. We're talking to you, fella. And we're talking
about seducing the woman you've been wanting to seduce. It'll take some effort—but
not that much time, all in all. Doctor Russ A. Rueger claims it should only take
a week, if you apply yourself and follow his instructions. Who says nobody listens
to doctors? SUN, SAND, GIRLS, SUN, SAND, GIRLS.... Those are pretty magical
words, aren't they? They apply to the magical places we report on this month in
"The World's Most Sensual Beaches ... and Sensuous Women." Printed words
convey some information, but so do, certainly, printed images—that's why
we've published the pictures of so many gorgeous women, the regulars of the beaches
we're talking about. And don't miss the box on the best nude beaches in the United
States. It'll give you some ideas on where to spend your summer vacation. But
watch out for sunburn. Till next month...
