Everybody's got to pay some dues. You're sitting around the poker table with the
boys on Thursday night, you've got to ante up. You're planning on that promotion
at work, you've got to put in the hours for that know-nothing boss. You're looking
for a long-lasting relationship with that beautiful babe, you've got to take the
time to show her how much you care.
So it isn't so odd that when two up-and-coming young Hollywood stars teamed up
to make a movie, the theme was: Do what you have to do so you can do what you
want to do. Gallery gives you a clear picture of two not-so-ordinary moviemakers
as we bring into focus Tim Robbins (Tapeheads, Bull Durham, Cadillac Man) and
John Cusack (Tapeheads, Eight Men Out, Say Anything) in a profile starting on
page 42.
Now when it comes time for putting up or shutting up, there's no better place
to do it than in a casino. After all, that's why people build these places, isn't
it? But have the rules changed as regards finding a place to play a game of chance?
Author Don Dewey, who's donated his share of antes in gambling parlors from Brooklyn
to Britain and back again, lets you in on the secret answer in "Best Bets"
(see page 62). It's a sure bet that it's not what you're thinking right now.
In some professions, it feels as if you never stc.p paying your dues. The private
detective business, for instance. But the times are changing in that line of work,
