EDITORIAL NOTE
I was in New York last week for a pretty sweet honor. Girls Gone Wild Magazine
was named "One of the Hottest Launches of the Year" by the Media Industry
Newsletter, a trade publication that takes magazines and the magazine business
a whole lot more seriously than we do. I was invited to attend a swanky awards
breakfast at the Park Hyatt in Manhattan, where I found a vast ballroom full of
sharp-looking male and female executive types in nicely tailored suits. The magazine
industry is largely centered in New York and most of these people seemed to know
each other. I knew none of them, and felt like a party crasher as I loaded up
a plate with bacon and croissants bumped my way through the room looking for an
empty seat. I found a place at a table near the back where I sat down, opened
my napkin and smiled at my neighbor through mouthfuls of breakfast. She was an
icy-looking blonde whose nametag listed her as editor of one of the upscale gourmet
magazines. She took a glance at my own "Girls Gone Wild" nametag and
looked away, never to make eye contact again.
The centerpiece for each table was a cute stack of small gift boxes tied together
with a bow. While listening to various awards being handed out and dry speeches
being made from the stage, my mind wandered to this centerpiece. I wondered aloud
whether the boxes contained anything or were purely decorative. My tablemates
ignored my question and the blonde woman shifted away from me with an audible
sigh of annoyance. I shrugged, untied the bow and opened the top box. It contained
two chocolate truffles. "Candy!" I said, and helped myself to one. The
second box contained mint cookies. The third, some fancy Caramel corn, and so
on. I sampled my way through the boxes, gobbling happily, leaving a pile of wrappings
and tissue paper on the table. Suddenly, I heard the name of our magazine booming
over the loudspeakers. There were murmurs through the ballroom; "What? Girls
Gone Wild? Are they serious?" I swallowed one more truffle, washed it down
with the rest of my coffee and made my way to the stage to collect our award.
Jet-lagged and a bit hung over, I smiled and made a few remarks. I don't remember
what I said, but I did get some laughs. Our magazine was selected from a field
of over 600 new titles, so this award is actually pretty impressive, and I am
very proud to receive it. I accepted many congraTulatory handshakes as I left
the stage. Back at my own table, the blonde pretended to be absorbed in the correct
Sugaring of her cappuccino. At the end of the ceremony the emcee announced that
someone at each table would win a surprise gift. The winner's placemat contained
a gold sticker underneath. The blonde turned her placemat over and yelped with
delight. She won! The prize? The centerpiece — which had been torn apart
and lay in rubble before my plate. I sheepishly pushed the boxes and wrappers across the table at her. She didn't look at me.
"No thanks, you keep it;' she said. People in this industry are so nice!
At the end of the day, I went home with lots of candy, a sweet award and a determination
to work even harder to make this the best magazine you ever saw.
