EDITORIAL NOTE
TIMEOUT
Let's face it. You're not getting any younger. You know it and so does everybody
else. Age. It's an inevitablility which you can make into an ugly crucifixion
or a growing, learning—even fun—experience. The way you handle it
is up to you.
We've all been the shoulder to countless individuals who have expressed a frightening
concern over the fact that age is affecting their social lives. As each new year
encroaches on their fading youth, they become more and more terrified that they
are no longer going to be able to live the life they choose to live. To party
and have fun. To pick up hot, young studs and to be pleased with what they have
to offer—looks wise—in return. Ego. They feel cheated. In their eyes
they're becoming less attractive—less appealing. Paranoia sets in and questions
arise when someone—especially someone younger—expresses an interest
in them. What are they really after? To paraphrase a line used by J. Paul Getty—It's
no longer the blue of my eyes, it's the green of my money.
Well, get a grip or the worst of your fears will become a reality. Face the facts
and deal with your future. Life's a bank and we're all little credit cards. There's
a limit to what we can get away with; and, there's an expiration date when the
old is replaced by the new. You're the cardholder and as long as your credit holds
up, those renewals will keep on coming.
So take it for all it's worth. Live life to its fullest. You're getting older
and better! Youth is merely a form of naivete which creates this illusion of appeal.
Everyone wants to have a second shot. Doing it over again. People see their current
problems in life as something they could avoid by being young again. Back in the
days when they weren't faced with these problems. They remember the happier times
(forgetting all the bullshit they had to go through). Like a romance that's over,
in time you remember all the good times and forget the times the little shit fucked
up your life. Which is usually why it ended in the first place.
So the key to making it with a healthy mind and spirit as the years count down
is to look at what you're gaining and maximizing the living you do in the years
you have left.
Travel. Get your shit together and make some money. There's nothing worse than
getting old and not having the money to do the things you used to do for free
back when you were pretty.
Always picture yourself like a kid. Remember back when you used to get excited
thinking about what you were going to be when you grew up? Well, you're still
growing, kid, so keep up the excitement. There's plenty ahead. As much as you
make yourself go for. It's only over when you give up.
Educate yourself. Learn from everything you do. Everything you see and experience.
Make every experience positive by searching out the good in each situation. No
matter how terrible things may appear on the surface, look deeper. There is always
a good side. If nothing else, you've learned what not to do again in the future.
But more often than not, there is a positive side that you may be overlooking
because you can't see past what appears to be the pits.
Out of ten tries for whatever it is in life that your after, one will succeed.
Those are the odds; so, don't give up just because you didn't get everything you
were shooting for the first nine rounds. Number ten is right around the corner.
If it makes you feel better by creating an illusion of youth you've long outlived,
there are countless plastic surgeons qualified to nip and tuck away decades with
a twist of the blade. The problem is you'll have to keep moving because your "friends"
who keep what nature gave them will rat you off in a heartbeat. (Who her? She's
twice my age!)
Don't let the years get you down. Live 'em out and look forward to the ones ahead.
The prettiness of your youth—believe me—will be far outweighed by
the talents you'll gain with experience.
Keep a diary and log all the rotten things that happen to you so you can look
back in the future and be glad that shit's over with.
