Models for erotic magazines are a special breed. Sure, they do the job for the
money—everybody's gotta eat, and you use your specific talents to pay the
tab—but it takes a daring girl to take off her clothes and enter the fantasy
life of men they don't know. I wonder how many women model nude just for the dough.
I watched an old 1954 movie the other night called Shield for Murder. In it, a
demure young woman prepared for her first shift working as a nightclub cigarette
girl. She posed in front of a mirror and admired herself in her black bustier,
fishnet stockings, and backless high heels. A shy but pleased smile crossed her
face, and then she picked up the tray of cigarettes and harnessed it around her
neck and in front of her waist. You could tell that the girl was happy to be trying
a job like this, a job that affirmed her attractiveness. It was a great moment,
and the actress who played the role so well was Marla English, who was also a
favorite pinup of that era.
Like that character in the movie, I think many models put their egos on the line
when they display themselves in provocative ways. Even if their audience is unseen
out in magazineland, the ladies want to know that they put smiles on your faces,
just before you get down to the stroking. It can never just be about the cash
when it's also about a woman's very image of herself.
Similarly, as your editor, I don't do this job only for the money, but also because
