EDITORIAL NOTE
Here it's Christmas already and the staff of Men Only have hardly gotten over
the previous one. Fleet Street shall, for a time, be a place of extreme gaiety,
ejecting beaming faces from the doors of the pubs which will doubtless be filled
to the rafters.
As is customary every Christmas, we have tried to make this issue fit in with
the festive Yuletide spirit: something shivery, something funny, something sexy,
something bizarre and, quite naturally, something to look at.
Daniel Farson, the famed writer and television personality, leads the way with
a truly extraordinary article on the eroticism that lurks behind Dracula. Farson
is in a position to know of what he writes, since his very own great-uncle was
the famous Bram Stoker who did, of course, create the infamous character. Farson's
credibility is further enhanced by the fact that he's a connoisseur of the macabre,
most notably through Jack the Ripper, his best-selling book. As for his exclusive
Men Only article on his great-uncle's creation, we can but recommend that you
don't attempt to read it without a stiffening brandy by your side.
The less frightening aspects of the season are represented by Brian O'Hanlon and
the highly disreputable Jack Izard. The latter takes a break from his usual explorations
to recall some of his most unusual Christmas antics. Starting with his childhood,
he lays waste to his family, strips his own sad self naked, and then moves along
the years to the present — a quite scandalous memoir. Brian O'Hanlon, on
the other hand, being equally extroverted, tries a double-take on his favourite
sport, rugby. In the first instance he looks back on the Christmas he most wants
to forget and shows that rugby players do know how to booze. In the second instance,
this time a bit more sober, he interviews Willie John McBride, Captain of the
British Lions, who was capped fifty-eight times for his country and led the triumphant
tour to South Africa against the Springboks earlier this year. The interview covers
not only the sport itself, but the management side, the occasional hooliganism
and the female camp followers — making it a very unusual sports interview
indeed. Score twice for O'Hanlon!
The bizarre is represented by renowned author G. L. Simons with Sexual Superlatives,
his remarkable new series based on the as yet unreleased The Simons Book of Sexual
Records, which promises to be the bestseller of the forthcoming year.
The sexiest thing in the magazine is, of course, Fiona Richmond, who this month
avoids the cold by wandering through exotic Hong Kong in pursuit of whatever mischief
might present itself ... there may not be snow and mistletoe, but the compensations
are exquisite.
Lynchpin of this issue is undoubtedly the Men Only Calendar, a twelve-page portfolio
of the most popular girls of the year which should enliven your drab walls no
end — just be sure your friends don't steal it!
And last but , not least, we have all your usual favourites, plus a larger-than-usual
gallery of lovely ladies. Now have yourselves a very merry Christmas/!
