EDITORIAL NOTE
The economic crisis is deepening the gloom of the whole coun- try, but it hasn't
dampened the spirit of Men Only. This month, in defiance of bleak prophesies,
we have filled our pages with a variety of items designed to entertain and titillate
you. And who better to kick off with than Billy Connolly, Scotland's bearded,
boozy comic-cult hero whose recent tour of the States and whose best-selling records
are proving that Scottish humour is not solely confined to the tartan brigade
? With another British tour to his name now, and more frequent appearances on
television, Connolly seems set to follow in the footsteps of the famous Harry
Lauder, although, as he told Associate Editor, Alan Radnor, he tries to avoid
the kilt and haggis image. Turn then, to the interview for a glimpse into the
rough and ready world of Clydeside Connolly.
A far cry from Connolly's hilarious world is the nightmare climate of religious
and sexual hysteria. In this month's lead feature, Saints, Sinners and Sex, writer
Kate Barlay examines those dark ages when torture and humiliation were used against
those who committed sins against the established moral laws. And, as Ms Barlay
so trenchantly points out the torture offered a sly sexual pleasure to those who
administered it.
Finally, for those with an interest in the truth behind the sensational South
of France sex stabbing, which made Fiona Richmond hit the headlines, see her own exclusive account of the affair, with accompanying pictures, on page 64.
Enjoyment and education rolled into one. Have a ball.
