EDITORIAL
SWINGINGEST STREET in Europe—and Europe has some really swinging streets—is the broad Reeperbahn that runs through the Sankt Pauli district in Hamburg, Germany. According to knowledgeable Time Magazine—noted for its in-depth reporting-3,000 of Sankt Pauli's 13,000 residents are prostitutes; and in 200 yards along Herbertstrasse, there are 20 bordellos staffed with painted ladies who sit in show windows 24 hours a day to lure passers-by. No wonder, then, that Hamburg's citizens have nicknamed the Reeperbahn "The Raper"—although it is usually tourists who get seduced. B-girls and waiters, using every conceivable trick and backed up by gangs of extortionists, blackmailers, and strong-arm boys, have been known to charge and collect—as much as $600 for a single sucker's bout of boozing. Lately, however, Hamburg cops have been
cracking down, refusing licenses and tossing thugs in jail. Yet, city authorities are to careful not to tame The Raper too much. Its notoriety is a big tourist attraction, largely responsible for making the Reeperbahn Europe's richest as well as its swingingest street. Total haul for the year: $25 million.
LATEST SLAP at the Beatles comes from Ingrid Bergman, of all people, who recently observed how things have changed since 1949, when she abandoned her husband to fly off with Roberto Rossellini. In those days, Ingrid was forever banished by the American public just because she and Rossellini indulged in parenthood, marriage, and separation in that order. Nowadays, however, "No one objects to the Beatles having a holiday with their girls," said Ingrid, "perhaps because everyone is so pleased that they are not taking boys with them."
MOST LIKELY CANDIDATE for Woman of the Year, British playgirl Christine Keeler, emerged from prison ready to forget her past. After serving six months of a nine-month perjury sentence (she was released early for "good behavior"), Christine told reporters that she planned to go into the movies. "I know I've no experience," she admitted, "but I've got to begin somewhere." Seems she already has.
