EDITOR'S PAGE
Forum is a unique publication: it is the only serious magazine of sex information and sex journalism in the country. Although Forum has inspired scores of imitators, it is by far the best-selling and most authoritative digest in the field.
As the new editorial director of Forum, I hope to make the magazine required reading for everybody who enjoys sex and thinking about sex. If the unexamined life is not worth living, it follows that the unexamined erotic life likewise has few advantages.
This special edition of Forum reflects our interest in lively and intelligent
writing about the sexual cosmos. For example, Dr A. Tripp, intellectual heir to Kinsey, does a monthly column on myriad matters of eros. His essay on orgasm in this issue is both original and provocative, qualities of mind that we admire and encourage in our contributors.
Forum also makes and breaks news. Our investigation into secret Army sex surveys during World War II led to the discovery of "VD Problems of White Enlisted Men" and "VD Problems of Negro Enlisted Men." These historic documents, first suppressed and then lost in the National Archives for more than thirty years, are revealed here—and in the newsstand edition of the December Forum—for the first time.
In the past months, we have published several articles and interviews of unusual note: a consideration of Kinsey Institute data that shows a correlation between penis size and race; a debate with Dr. John D. Perry, coauthor of the controversial book The G. Spot; an intriguing essay on the erotic life of cats; and a profile of the prostate, man's most unsung private part.
Since sex is too important to be left to a narrow angle of vision, every issue
of Forum is a mosaic of news, opinion, humor, arcana, anatomy and autobiography.
The "Open Forum" section is our op-sex-ed page, Where readers discuss
their own affairs and vent their own ideas. A panel of expert doctors and therapists answer queries, vexing and otherwise, in the pages of "Forum Adviser."
In short, if you love sex, then Forum could become an obsession.
And I believe the regular December edition—with further documentation from
"The Pentagon Papers of Sex"—is the finest in Forum's fourteen-year history.
