Playboy Japan first started publishing in July 1975. It was a popular magazine for over 30 years. However, Japan had a huge recession in late 2008 and sales of Playboy tanked so the magazine stopped publishing in January 2009. Playboy Japan never became hugely popular as it did in other markets so the publisher has not decided to republish the magazine even though the economy has gotten stronger.
