PUBLISHER'S LETTER
The MeasuresOf Success
There are a lot of different ways to measure success. Obviously, in business, the bottom line is sales. Start-up publications face an uphill battle, especially in adult interest magazines because the saturation of the market is so high. There are just so many men's magazines vying for the same audience that usually only established publications can win a piece of the pie. A large percentage of startup publications die after the first couple- of issues, making survival of a new magazine very rare. Even rarer is a new men's magazine that has paid subscriptions because most readers won't subscribe to a new magazine until they have seen a few issues of it. This is why we at Plumpers and Big Women feel especially lucky. We have not only survived, but have enjoyed an unheard of increase in paid subscriptions. Before PBW ever hit the market there were close to 1,000 paid subscriptions. Since then the number has almost tripled.
Another way to judge success is by the number of imitators who follow. There have been a lot of magazines that have brought us the beauty of the bountiful body and we are not the first to dedicate an entire magazine to the plumper format. But we feel that PBW has taken plumper magazines to a new level. While some others were busy degrading big women in their copy and making fun of large ladies, we set out to show that plumpers are just as glamorous and sexy as other types of women. And if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then we must have succeeded. At least two other men's magazines are currently planning to publish magazines with styles similar to Plumpers and Big Women. One of these copycat publications is being headed by former Dugent editor John Fox. Of course, borrowing a format is nothing new to Fox. He originally left Dugent to start a magazine that, like our sister publication GENT, is dedicated to big-busted women. John's next publishing inspiration will probably be a magazine dedicated to black women. Sorry, John, but Dugent beat you to the punch there as well with the publication of Sugah.
While the number of sales and imitators are in constant flux, one thing which hasn't changed is the support and interest we have received from the readers. We were overwhelmed by the response to our vote for the favorite cover (which, by the way, ended in a three-way tie). And the mail has been just as plentiful and positive. All of this leads us to believe that the best barometer of our success is our wonderful relationship with our readers.
