Editorial Note - On The House
Although we like to think every season with PUB is one in which to be jolly, there are never quite so much fun and games as at Christmastime. Seems that one party just runs right on into the next, nonstop. To ease the ache from all of the hangovers that are sure to haunt the heads of peripatetic party-trippers, we've put together a special package of Christmas Cheer, including an additional sixteen pages this issue. You'll find a preview of our attractive and potent potions on page 11, with the first, "Spiced Wine Punch," following closely behind. Each of our selections will ease the pain of any post-prandial or post-merrymaking discomfort and is guaranteed to delight even the most cynical Scrooge.
In keeping with the spirit of Yuletide, PUB asked a couple of prominent citizens to contribute a list of things which they felt would be appropriate gifts for their friends—and perhaps a couple of not-so-good acquaintances. Skitch Henderson, former musical director of NBC and well-known conductor of symphony orchestras around the country, took pen in hand to write down his personal selections for a number of people familiar to all of us. Likewise for Roy Cohn, who first came to national prominence as the young legal counsel to the late Senator Joseph McCarthy during the Congressional Hearings in the early 1950's. Their contributions appear on pages 8 and 9.
Since PUB believes wholeheartedly in enjoying the good life, we have come up with a couple or three of holiday specials to share with our readers. The first, "The Sensuous Magic of Liqueurs," jumps off on page 18. By Paul Brock, our Canadian friend who has appeared more than once in our pages before, the article will enlighten any number of gentlemen who truly appreciate the finer things in life, especially of a gustatory nature.
Going ahead on the gourmet route, PUB'S editor, Bill Thomas, provides a drinking, culinary, and sightseeing guide for anyone who wants to make the most of a week in Paris. (See page 20.)
In the anchor slot (page 112), Contributing Editor Ron Butler presents his recipe for that familiar cold-weather favorite in "Chili: Some Like It Hot."
In between, a great deal more is happening—like the light-hearted story by John Keefauver on page 24: "How Higgard Malleypride Talked to God and the Devil with the Help of Tillie Gort, Who Was in the Middle." This marks John's first appearance in PUB, although he has appeared in several
other men's magazines,
"Ye Olde Cock & Bull Story" this time out comes from D. F. Matthews, another frequent contributor to various magazines and a writer who hails from Pennsylvania. We suspect you'll be seeing more of his work here in the future.
Colette Cachet puts her mark on the "Pub Pourri" section (pages 35-42), and Gabriel R. Vogliotti gives us a peek at prostitution, both legal and illegal, in our most wide-open state with his "The Girls of Nevada" (pages 75-82).
A couple of regular PUB writers return for our special holiday issue. In "Passing Grades" (page 92), Bradd Milstone reveals the problems a girl can encounter on her way to earning a higher education—even when she gives her all.
According to Roy Battle in "Doing the Hustle, California Style" (page 108), apparently the girls in his native state are not giving anything away. At least that's the story with the amateur (?) hookers he interviewed recently.
Of course, all this is only a part of the brew we have mixed up for December. More of you have written us about your sexual adventures and we're happy to share them in "Sex in Your Town." Then there's our "Pub of the Month" by two young men, Ed Nolin and Mark Alessi, of Hartford. Connecticut.
We didn't bother to tie up our neat package with a big red ribbon as we felt it would only delay your getting at all these delicious goodies. Which reminds us: A good gift to almost anyone except your old maid aunt is a year's subscription to PUB. Our plans for the new year coming up include some delicious surprises, plus plenty of the pulchritude that any guy would love to find in his Christmas stocking, between the sheets, or on the front door step.
You can make merry with PUB every month of the year.
We regret that an incomplete copyright notice was used in the October issue with an excerpt from "The Beer Can." The correct notice should have read as follows: From The Beer Can by The Beer Can Collectors of America ° Beer Can Collectors of America 1976 with permission of Greatlakes Living Press, Publishers.
