PUBLISHER'S STATEMENT
OOOOOOHHH CANADA!
We usually consider ourselves apolitical, but sometimes it becomes necessary to make statement because we are all concerned about our country — Canada.
By the time you read this, Canada will have gone through another federal election. And it really doesn't matter who wins because certain realities have to be faced if this country is going to beat the energy crisis, unemployment and inflation.
Clark and his party achieved power in the last federal election not because of the Conservative platform or Clark's policies, but because the Trudeau government had been consistently blowing it for the past few years. The May 1979 election was in no way a credit to the Conservative Party, but was a public backlash against the stagnant Liberal Cabinet. The Conservative victory was due to a negative public attitude and was definitely not a positive step forward.
Trudeau is undoubtedly the more charismatic of the two, but charisma cannot replace sound policy-making unless we're talking about Hollywood. And who can afford to go see a movie these days? It was a foregone conclusion in the last election that Clark had to come up with a platform of capable political judgment and public confidence in order to win the election, survive the eventual minority government and stay in power. What followed was a government of indecision and political flip-flops.
Canada is in desperate need of a leader and a party which will provide the country with a long range, feasible program. This is a necessity, for never in Canada's history has there been a greater need for far-sighted and positive action. Without such a policy, the very survival of Canada as a nation is in serious doubt. It's time to face the music so we may be able to sing a happier tune in the future!
Foreign investment has provided us with enough rope arid we are now just beginning to feel the self-imposed noose tighten as non-Canadian investors kick the chair out from under us. Until we gain control of our own economy, we will be at the mercy of foreign financial interests. Unemployment in our country will rise and fall at the whims of foreign busInesses and we will continue to be one large foreign subsidiary.
Canada must adopt a policy which conserves the natural energy resources we already have and which will create and and exploit new sources of energy to ensure our self-sufficiency. Canada is one of the few countries in which energy self-sufficiency is a definite possibility. But so far attempts to realize our true potential have been minimal at best.
The federal system must be overhauled to meet the requirements of the strengthened Western provinces, the unsatisfied Maritimes, a hot-shot Ontario and a provincial government in Quebec (whether the Parti Quebecois or the Quebec Liberals) which demands changes.
Canadians have had the chance to see both Clark and Trudeau as the Leader of the Opposition and as Prime Minister. As critics of the government in power, both have achieved expertise. We now know how well they ask the questions. What remains to be seen is how well they can answer them.
