A friend of ours who just got back from Bangkok was raving about two things: the
food and the massages o be found over there. Some of the dishes my friend raved
about were the hot and sour prawn soup, beef curried in a peanut sauce, and a
spicy pork salad.
I was more interested in his massage experiences. They ranged from a $5.00 hour-long
massage at the famous massage school in Bangkok, located at the Wat Po temple,
to a deluxe treatment at the spa at the Oriental Hotel for $40. My friend explained
that the idea behind Thai massage is to tap into the body's natural energy by
stretching the limbs and applying weight to key pressure points. To do this, the
operator uses his/her palms, fingers, feet, knees—and sometimes even sits
on you.
Sounds good, huh? Then again, there's the "other" type of massage—the
