EDITOR'S PIECE
It was supposed to be a party. You know, lots of fun, food, and boys. Some of
my fellow magazine editors were there: Fred Goss of Men, Freshmen and Unzipped,
Mickey Skee of AVN, as well as other assorted luminaries of the industry. We were
all behaving ourselves, dishing over this and that movie or porn star when someone
broke the bombshell that, as far as we were concerned, ruined the evening.
You may have already heard, or possibly even have seen it. It certainly has the
industry all in a flurry, rapidly polarizing people and forcing everyone to takes
sides. The news? Bareback sex, as it is called, or more commonly known, condomless
sex.
When the AIDS crisis hit us in the mid 80s, the industry quickly took it upon
itself to educate viewers, hopefully in an entertaining manner, about how to have
safe sex. All man-to-man action in videos since then have had the performers use
condoms, showing that safe sex can be fun sex. We all hope that this has led,
in some small way, to the downswing in the number of cases of HIV infection. The
straight industry, on the other hand, has chosen not to incorporate safe sex into
its videos, touting marketability as their primary reason. Obviously, in their
opinion, it's more important to sell videos that to save lives.
Recently, three gay video directors have announced their intentions to mimic the
straight industry and remove safe sex practices from their videos. In a competitive
market, they see this as the key to their longevity and success. Obviously, the
uproar from the rest of the industry was immediate, with distributors refusing
to carry such a product, but independent directors who market and distribute their
own product don't care what the rest of the industry has to say.
When I was younger, not all that long ago really, watching videos was my first
introduction to the world of gay sex. What I saw on the screen was what I mimicked
in my own life. I can't help but feel that there are other young men out there
who do the same. I'm afraid that someone out there will watch unsafe sex in a
video and believe, since they see it onscreen, that it is all right to ditch the
condoms, and will put himself at risk of being infected with the HIV virus.
To this end, I cannot in good conscious support companies that will produce unsafe-sex
videos. I believe it is morally wrong and despicable of any person to contemplate
committing an act that could lead to another's harm. So, as a magazine, we will
not participate with any company who sells such a product. We will not review
these videos and we will not promote them or their companies in our pages. I am
incensed that people would even consider producing such videos and we will not
be a part of it in any way. Most of the major companies agree with this position.
Colin Harris, promotions director of Falcon, recently told us, "We feel exhibiting
unsafe sex is totally irresponsible, and shows a lack of respect for the models
and for the viewers. Even if we did have a cure for AIDS, there are many other
sexually transmitted diseases out there worth protecting ourselves from."
Mike Donner of All Worlds shares this opinion: "The directors, models and
studios have a responsibility to depict safe sex. If those guys had even a bit
of a conscience, they wouldn't do portray unsafe sex practices. They are prostituting
the community just to make a buck."
SKINFLICKS is turning a page in its history next issue with its 18th anniversary.
Eighteen is typically the age which we refer to as adulthood. SKINFLICKS is taking
its adulthood seriously, which is why we are making this statement.
Ultimately, the decision is yours. Producers will only make what the public will
buy. We hope you see the value of our decision to not support what we feel are
irresponsible studios, and add your voice to ours, as well as to the other magazines
who agree with us. This industry exists to entertain. Let's do in a manner that
is safe and respectful to our performers and to ourselves.
