EDITOR'S PIECE
There's a lot of stuff out there these days. It was just a few years ago that
the market was dominated by a handful of larger companies who were pumping out
all the hot male flicks you could handle. Now, there are dozens upon dozens of
smaller companies vying for their slice of the market share.
What does this mean to us? It means we get upwards of 50 videos a month coming
in our doors for review! Since there's only space for about 30 reviews in each
bi-monthly issue, we can't possibly review them all. So, the bunch of us stand
around screaming and yelling at each other until we either reach some sort of
consensus on what to review or I put down my proverbial editorial foot and make
an Imperial Decision. It's a tough job, really!
But more importantly, what does this mean to you? Well, healthy competition is
always considered a good thing. It means more to choose from and it means there's
a greater possibility of something getting your attention. On the other hand,
there's also a lot more crap out there, too! Sorry to be so candid, but more doesn't
always equal better, and smaller companies don't always have the resources to
put together a quality production. It's an old trick to put together a glossy
box that will grab a buyer's attention, only to get the video home to find out
it's one of the worst videos of all time. More videos to choose from means there
are more to be careful about!
The other danger that exists is that some of the smaller — and lower-quality
companies — can put out product at lower costs. This practice is starting
to edge out the studios that put out higher-quality videos, but must charge a
bit more for them. Remember: you get what you pay for!
I felt compelled to write this column mainly because of the sheer volume of videos
we have received recently. Although we have been finding a few diamonds in the
rough, there also has been a sharp increase in the number of bad videos. Hopefully,
we're doing a good job of helping find that gem and weeding out the pure crap.
There are still a lot of excellent studios out there that consistently are putting
out high-quality product. We're also not saying that everything else is crap,
only that we need to be a little more careful in choosing what we spend our money
on.
Because the competition has increased so much, we have been seeing some rather
interesting and downright humorous attempts at getting a potential customer's
attention. It seems that some of the major studios has taken to "enhancing"
their model's anatomies in their brochures. It has been common practice since
the porn industry discovered PhotoShop to "clean up" their models. No
one wants to see a huge zit on his favorite model. Now, following what fans have
been playfully doing on the Internet for a while now, the studios are also lengthening
the model's cocks. What makes it so darn amusing is we've seen these models before
and we know that some of these guys are not that big! Even more amusing is how
obvious the enlarging job is! Well, chalk it up to insecure models or to insecure
studios that don't think their models measure up, or you can just sit back and
get a good chuckle out of it!
Finally, we're hoping you've had a chance to pick up the newest copy of HMR. Since
we took over with the last issue, we've been working hard to give it a whole new
look and eventually tie it in more tightly with SKINFLICKS. Take a walk to the
newsstand and let us know how we're doing!
