EDITORIAL
We are accustomed to receiving hate mail from the anti-gay fundamentalist right — that, as they say, goes with the territory. We do not, however, expect to receive such mail from within our own community. We do, from time to time, receive critical mail from our gay readership. We welcome the complaints (and try to correct them), the suggestions (and often act on them), and criticism (even though we cannot be all things to all men). Still, when vicious hate mail arrives from our own brothers, we find it very disturbing. This week we received just such an epistle, scrawled in a semi-illiterate, almost illegible hand, with no return address or name. It read:
"Homosexual is to Gay what Negro is to Black. What Hebrew is to Jew. Your mag is not even owned by Gay people but by Heterosexuals. You are self-hateing (sic) Gay puppets of them/ Any Gay man who uses the word homosexual is an Enemy of good, proud, out, and open Gay men who are honest.
"You (Douglas) and your mag are enemies of the national gay community. I have an obligation to be Gay, never to be Homosexual! I'll leave that to sell outs like you. And I will NOT vote for sell-out coalitions of lieing (sic) Rainbows, homos, Negros, or sixth (sic) actors from late shows. A candidate has to talk to me alone and not mix me in any other group. I hope your heterosexual bosses kill the lot of you. We don't need traitors like you.
"I am a white male, butch, Gay Guy, no lie! I'm proud, say it goddamn fucken (sic) loud. There are more gay men than just in the East. And we don't vote for Rainbows. I hope all of you get AIDS and die."
While one is tempted to dismiss this as the work of a kook, one cannot ignore his views. We believe that being gay and homosexual are quite compatible, and only when one cannot be both does one have a problem with his lifestyle. And as for politics, we still believe in Rainbows, for there is strength in numbers, and we take great pride in the fact that this gay magazine is produced by homosexuals and heterosexuals working together, which in itself is a rainbow of sorts.
We face enough problems from without; we should not have to expend energy on pernicious threats from within. As we fight for our own independence, we might well remember Benjamin Franklin's observation at another struggle: "We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately."
