EDITORIAL NOTE
Although the Reagan years, with his henchman Edwin Meese, were rapidly (and thankfully)
becoming a dim memory for those of us in the porn biz, we've been rudely reminded
recently of the mischief
of which they were capable.
In the lame duck days of the former administration, a piece of legislation was
pushed through the Congress and immediately signed into law which placed even
more restrictions on the adult publishing and video industries. Falsely labelled
as an effort to combat child pornography, it is really an end run that could,
if vigorously enforced, put many (if not all) gay and straight publications out
of business and poses a severe threat to producers of erotic videos.
The lawmakers' concern, you see, was not only with current and future product,
which would not be particularly difficult to deal with, but with publications,
films and videos which were released as long as ten years ago. It's the retroactive
part of the new law which has so many people quaking in their boots. As it now
stands, the federal goverment can demand that we provide proof of legal age for
models and actors going all the way back to 1979, when many video producers and
some other publishers and photographers were much more relaxed about the kind
of identification models provided and weren't always scrupulous about keeping
copies of those I.D.s.
The new law says that two pieces of identification, one a photo I.D., must be
obtained, copied and photographed before a model can be hired for all future publications
and productions. Easily done. Not so easily done is producing that kind of identification
for models who were shot ten years ago, should the government diligently pursue
that provision of the law. Models come and go at a rapid pace in this business.
Trying to track someone down who posed for nude photos that many years ago could
be practically, if not completely, impossible.
Although we are not aware of any instances yet where the government is pursuing
this provision of the law it could spell real trouble for us and for you, the
readers and viewers who have enjoyed your right to adult materials for so many
years now. While we are sure that the law will be challenged in the courts, and
most probably be struck down, it is yet another chilling incident of Big Brother
trying to tell us how to lead our lives and restrict our entertainment to the
saccharine variety of which they approve.
Rest assured, we'll be fighting back and we'll expect your help, should the time
arrive. Meantime, without thumbing our nose at the law, inside our pages this
month are five hot young men (all over 18 with proof on file) to excite and please
you. We're not going anywhere—except up—and we're taking you with
us!
