Drugs & Masturbation
Political chickenshit at its best! We're referring, of course, to the firing of
Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders by President Bill Clinton back in December. Clinton
took his lumps in the November `94 elections, and one of his first actions afterwards
to placate the new right wing bullies was to fire Elders for her outspoken views
on the legalization of drugs and teaching students to masturbate as a way to practice
safe sex. What a crock!
Of course, the masturbation issue was, in reality a non-issue. What Elders said
was that students should be encouraged to choose masturbation over other forms
of sexual activity. She did not advocate masturbation, or that it should be taught
in schools as the glib-but-loosewith-the-facts politicians were quick to misquote
her. In reality, she commented that kids did not need to be instructed to masturbate.
Enough said.
What really got the former Surgeon General fired was her comments on drug legalization.
That issue should be studied very seriously. Now we're talking POLITICS. Politics
as in MONEY. Think of all the special interests who stand to lose big time if
drugs were legalized: everyone involved in growing, producing, transporting, smuggling,
packaging, distributing and selling; everyone involved in interdiction (trying
to stop the flow), from U.S. Customs to the DEA, the FBI and every state and local
police department; everyone who deals in property stolen by junkies to buy their
daily fixes; most of the courts and legal profession, and most of the prison system.
And how about the medical community and the vast drug treatment system? The mind
begins to boggle.
Maybe what President Clinton was worried about was that the U.S. economy has become
dependent on drugs. Not only a direct economic threat to all the groups listed
above if drugs were legalized, but how about the trickle-down effect? For example,
all those expensive homes, cars, jewels, etc., bought with the proceeds of drug
dollars. Think of it: an addict walking into a drugstore and buying his fix with
a prescription at competitive, real prices instead of the inflated prices caused
by making it illegal. And what about new addicts? Who's going to hang around schools
and neighborhoods trying to get kids hooked if the future supply incentive is
gone?
It wouldn't surprise us if the biggest Political Action Committee of all was the
anti-drug legalization lobby, funded secretly by the drug barons in Columbia.
They simply couldn't allow the U.S. to ever legalize drugs because they have the
most to lose. Everything.
So, farewell Joycelyn Elders, you were just ahead of your time and out of step
with the phonies on both sides of the aisle. If previous Surgeons General had
warned about the hazards of cigarette smoking during the World War II era, they too would have gone down in flames.
