PUBLISHER'S NOTE
Is PENTHOUSE magazine publisher Bob Guccione up to his old tricks
again, or has he just lost all judgment whatsoever? The same guy who
brought pubic hair out of the bedroom and into the mainstream has once
again crossed the unofficial line as his June, 1995 issue of PENTHOUSE
proudly showed the famous 40-year-old photo of Marlon Brando wrapping
his lips around the end of a substantial cock. We heard about this
picture a generation ago from no less an authority than Bob Harrison,
then publisher of CONFIDENTIAL magazine, who once enjoyed such fame and
notoriety that people would line up at newsstands on the days new
issues of CONFIDENTIAL went on sale, to read such scandalous items as
actress Maureen O'Hara allegedly having sex in the balcony of a
theater. (The stuffed shirts at Time-Life Publishing have long since
taken over the nasty gossip with their PEOPLE magazine, and somehow
managed to make dirt clean and respectable.)
But back to the "Gooch." Is showing blow-jobs in close-up detail the
way to go in the future? Is it a good thing? Regular readers of men's
magazines know there is an unwritten rule that mainstream adult
publications do not show penetration. Just about everything goes—but
the camera stops just shy of actual penetration of any body cavity.
Unnatural, sure, but that's the way it's been now for some time and
it's probably just a matter of time before total explicitness is
accepted in print, as it is in adult videos.
Guccione has been pushing the limit for some time now, first in his
repetitive girl-girl pictorials, using photos where you'd swear the
girl's tongue was actually touching the other's snatch, to a recent
issue in which one girl's tongue was right on the other's asshole!
Those of us in the industry believe Guccione's pioneering is more from
desperation resulting from seriously declining sales than from a
dedicated drive to push back the boundaries of censorship. And for the
rest of us "wussies" who wouldn't dare to run explicit photos like
these, his chutzpa is a good thing. Or it has been in the past.
The biggest problem of censorship in this type of publishing comes not
from the "authorities," but from wholesalers and big retailers of
magazines who decide which magazines they will and will not distribute.
You can be sure that a marginal magazine would not get past these big
companies if it contained this Brando blow-job, but they sell tens of
thousands of copies of PENTHOUSE, so now their wallets may dictate the
outcome, not their scruples. It will be interesting to see the results
of this issue, and we will publish an up-date when the final numbers
are in.
