EDITORIAL NOTE
STRICTLY SPEAKING
We recently happened onto a Web site called christiandomesticdiscipline.com dedicated
to "Loving wife spanking in a Christian Marriage." In the best tradition
of pay-to-pray evangelism, it even has its own online store, offering steamy (but
faith-based) spanking-oriented romance novels, such as Week of Rebellion and Stubborn
Ways, along with handy marriage manuals like CDD Bible Study for Wives and Christian
Domestic Discipline 101.
Even more intriguing is the "Heirloom Intimates Collection" of "delicate
clothing for the lady of the house." Among the delicate favorites (at least
with us) are old-fashioned, "split-crotch pantaloons trimmed in eyelet and
your choice of satin ribbon color," promising to make good Christian wives
"feel sexy and cherished all at once."
We don't necessarily begrudge a bit of pious pervery, which has always been a
helpful recruiting tool for religious fanatics and provided endless fodder to
satirists and pornographers from Aristophanes to Sade. However, as with the 72
versions Al Qaeda promises its suicide bombers in the afterlife, our nudgenudge-wink-wink
good humor depends on the specifics for which the faithful are recruited.
Delving deeper into the CDD site, we found this all-too-revealing paragraph from
author Leah Kelley: "In today's society where any physical discipline is
severely frowned upon, it is important that even a. Christian Domestic Discipline
relationship be consensual; however, it is interesting to note that Biblically,
a man's right to chastise and discipline his wife is strongly implied. Just as
a parent would never stop to ask permission to chastise his child, a husband should
not have to obtain consent to discipline his wife; however, our legal system has
put him in the position of having to do so. Just as our culture is turned upside
down in so many other things, the traditional Christian marriage is no exception."
In other words, lip-service to consenusality aside, so-called "CDD"
is really about putting the best, Biblically sanctioned face on domestic abuse
as a source of sexual pleasure, the sort of thing that debauched kinksters like
ourselves deplore for hypocritical vice disguised as virtue. We're all about shameful
thrills, but not at the expense of unwilling "partners." We have our
own ideas of sinful behavior, and that's right at the top of our list.
