EDITORIAL NOTE
We deeply believe that love goes by many names and wears many faces, and we'd like to think that at least those citizens of the vanilla world who consider themselves "progressive" would support us in this view, whatever their own bedroom preferences might be. Of late, sadly, what's left of the left has largely abandoned its commitment to individual liberty. As an example, here's a recent Internet post from rad-fem porn basher DeAnander regarding BDSM: The argument 'I just happen to enjoy/"need" sexual fantasies of being raped [or raping], being hurt for hurting], and that is who I am and my identity must be respected,' seems to me as naive and as unreasonable as 'I just happen to feel a strong antipathy and fear towards people of colour or poor people, and that is just who I am and my identity must be respected.' It is a plea for the unexamined life and for a free pass to conform to the values of the hegemonic culture (while pretending to 'transgress,' which is kind of hilarious when you consider how grimly conformant BDSM is with received patriarchal ideology)."
Clearly no expert on BDSM, which tends toward zany diversity rather than grim conformism, DeAnander nonetheless considers herself qualified to ridicule consensual D/s sexuality as not only a trivial affectation, but worse, a hollow justification for ideas as heinous and destructive as racism. While we can't help wondering if this author would risk defying "progressive" orthodoxy regarding the authenticity of gay sexual orientation with similarly sneering condescension, that's not our real point.
Instead, we wish to underscore our previous warnings about growing sexual intolerance on the left as a threat to our personal liberties every bit as pernicious as the persecution we've endured at the hands of right-wing theocrats over the past eight years.
It's not our lives that go unexamined, for that is a luxury no member of a sexual minority group can afford. It is the life of the aspiring moral arbiter that does not bear close inspection, for fear of revealing the morbid and toxically perverse obsession with the sex lives of others that is its unmistakable trademark, regardless of the political rubric behind which it is hidden.
