EDITORIAL NOTE
WBird things breed in isolation, and some of the correspondence we get and the
things we see and read on the Web make us concerned for what goes on in the name
of BDSM where there is no larger standard of comparison. From here and there,
we get reports of cultish behavior that sounds more appropriate to a Warren Jeffs's
compound than a kinkster playspace.
Here's what we see that we don't like: Some guy invents a persona of vast magisterial
experience for himself (often posted on the Internet) accumulates one or two needy,
questing submissives around him, then parades them around as trophies at local
and regional events, drawing even less experienced players, male and female, to
him. He, of course, has his own ideas about proper protocol and correct technique—usually
based on his own fantasy life, and establishes these things as the standards for
his whole posse. In classic cult-meister fashion, he makes a point of keeping
his followers away from anyone who might know more about BDSM than he does, or
who might have a cautionary word or two to say regarding his insistence that the
Total Power Exchange model, as he interprets it, is the only real, true, valid
kink and that everything else is just poser bullshit.
And it's in the socially cloistered atmosphere of these cliques that abusive behavior
comes to be seen as normal. Subs have no voices, much less choices, and doms do
as Master Master does or they get pushed out. If anybody has a problem, the others
are there to remind the troublesome slave of her proper place. And if the Big
Guy decides to turn a buck off their hobbies by wiring his place as a cam-house,
well, a slave's wages are as much Master's property as her body.
If you find yourself in this kind of situation, you are not practicing BDSM. You
are being abused and exploited and you should leave—now. And take your sister
slaves with you.
