DIRECTOR'S NOTE WE'RE PLEASED BUT... We sold out the last issue! Although THE KEY has been around for 16 years, the
last issue was our first issue in the new format, the first issue with nation-wide
newsstand distribution. And we sold out! It's almost like selling out the first
issue of a brand-new magazine and that's something very rare in the magazine world.
(Except for comic books, where first issues are collectors' items).
Anyway, we're very pleased about it, not because we think we're so clever and
putting out such a terrific magazine (though, of course we do think exactly that),
but because we took a gamble and it paid off.
For years, we've been hearing that swinging will never really catch on in Canada,
that Canadians are too timid to ever do anything but fantasize alone in their
bedrooms. We never really believed it, but we never had any evidence on our side,
either. Until now. Until we sold out the last issue. Until the replies to the
ads started flowing into the office. Until we realized we had to hire extra help,
just to handle the mail.
Ladies and gentlemen, do you have any idea how many of you there are? There are
thousands, many thousands, in all shapes, sizes, colours and ages, with every
different taste and desire imaginable.
As I said, we're very pleased about that.
We are also very pleased that so many of you are responding to our call for photos
with your ads. That's something else we were told Canadians would never do. To
the critics and doomsayers, we say: Ha! To those of you who haven't sent in photos
with your ads, we say: Do it! You will get a better response.
That's what we're pleased about. Now, for what we're not so pleased about:
First, ourselves. We frankly did not anticipate the volume of mail we've been
receiving and we've fallen a little behind. We fixed that with more people and
a better filing system, but it will take a while before the backlog is cleared
up. Nobody will have to wait very long—a week at the most—before their
letter is forwarded, but we wanted same-day service and we're annoyed that we
blew it. But, as I said, that's been fixed and well before the next issue is on
the stands, your letters will be going out, each and every one, no later than
24 hours after they come in.
Which brings me to the other thing we're not pleased about: some of you, you know
who you are, are not following the instructions for placing and, especially, answering
ads, with the result that you are making a lot more work for us and slowing down
everybody's mail. So, shape up! It's in your own best interests.
See you next time.
