Recently, the authorities in the Los Angeles area have been cracking down on sex
films. Several producers have been busted, as well as some of the top talent agents.
With the harassment, many performers have been reluctant to show up on sets for
fear of being raided and hauled off to jail, and still others have quit doing
erotic videos altogether, which is exactly the effect the authorities want.
Historically, the authorities have had a rough time getting any obscenity charges
to stick. Many are well acquainted with the famous Memphis Trial involving Harry
Reems and many X-rated distributors and producers. Through a concerted effort,
Reems was able to reverse his conviction, and the courts seemed to back off a
bit.
The major problem with law and morality is that it infringes on the rights of
an individual's pursuit of happiness (or pleasure), and the government's attempt
to impose its morality is usually not greeted very warmly by a large section of
society.
With the current crackdown, the authorities have switched tactics and are using
the pandering laws to stop productions. Pandering is simply paying someone to
screw, which, in a way, puts the producer on the spot, and no one else.
Once the arrest has been made, according to recent reports, some officials have
been strong-arming the girls, threatening them with long prison terms, using loud,
abusive language if they don't "spill the beans" on every producer they
have worked with.
This may be the way cops interrogate thieves, muggers, rapists, murders, but to
treat young ladies whose only interest in life is in displaying their sexual energies
is chickenshit.
I don't think it will have a longterm effect on the production of X-rated features.
Producers will simply go elsewhere or be more careful about their productions.
Pornography is one of the oldest art forms, and will continue to be around for
a long time. The whole issue is a very tired one, but I can't help wondering if
the real reason to these periodic bursts to "clean up" society's ills
aren't just excuses by the authorities to replenish their supplies of the latest
and hottest pornography for their own viewing pleasure, disguised, of course,
as "reviewing the evidence."
