While it may not appear on the surface, one of the enduring strengths of the First
Amendment to the U. S. Constitution is that it contains its own checks and balances
which censors, made shortsighted by their fanatic determination to impose their
standards of acceptance on all of us, fail to see.
Indeed, it is surprising that more of those who are opposed to any form of censorship
have not discovered these safeguards for themselves.
To place any restriction on our freedom of speech weakens the entire structure
of the First Amendment. Therefore, all censorship tends to be self-defeating in
the long run. If it is fully carried out, it eventually denies censors their voice
to censor, because they will have succeeded in silencing us all.
Knowing this, they must face up to a momentous question: At what point should
they stop their bleating attacks to curb editorial and pictorial material in our
media which they find offensive?
The answer to that, of course, is that they should not attempt any censorship
in the first place. In that way they can guarantee us our freedom of speech, and
we, at the same time, can guarantee theirs. The perfect check and balance!
