EDITORIAL
Why are so many showbiz babes so obsessed with kissing girls and lesbian chic?"
Britain's News of the World recently asked. And answered: "It's amazing
how times have changed in only one decade," marvels psychologist Dr. Pamela
Spurr. `Ten years ago a lesbian kiss between two celebrity women would've been
a huge No-No on mainstream TV" And in fact, Laura Dern claimed ten years
later that she was "ostracized by Hollywood" after her April 1997
landmark liplock on the Ellen show: `There was certainly a backlash," she
admits. "It was awfully terrifying." And awfully hot!!
'What was once a big taboo is now seen as merely a touch risqué and shocking,"
explains Dr. Spurr, "and just plain senj fii n . In fact, it is the most
common male fantasy: being able to watch two women together and then hoping
they'll get to join in." Everyone can now join in to celebrate our EIGHTH
ode to the joys of celebrity lesbian love, "Girl•Girl Power 6"
{a sextet preceded by two volumes entitled 'Women 2 Women"}.
And lez love is all around us: `The Younger generation, epitomized by Peaches
Geldof {p. 64} and her gang. reports This Is London, "swap their sexuality
as easily as their style. Along with Katy Perry {our Issue 59 cover girl}, Peaches
has now kissed a girl—and she liked it! With that one act, she has joined
part-time lesbianism, taking advantage of the younger generation's complete
acceptance of malleable sexuality. This is an age," the mainstream magazine
continues, "when girls can like girls, and like boys, and like girls again
where Lady Gaga {p.24} can sing about her Poker Face (the look you get when
having sex with a man but fantasizing about a woman) and the Black Eyed Peas'
Fergie {p.32} can openly say: "I've experimented definitely, but I have
never had a steady girlfriend," while relishing the girl-on-girl action
in her latest video." Hot dog!
And we "Gotta Feeling" that nearly ALL the women in this issue are
not merely "gay for pay" or "bi for their guy" ... but genuinely
love other babes—and their lobes. And they're happy to SING its praises:
"All hUmma-porn-star">Umans are born with the ability to be attracted to both sexes,"
proclaims R&B megastar Rihanna. "I mean, I could see myself in a relationship
with a girl" {see for yourself on pgs. 20-23}! Adds page 28's popstar Pink:
"Love is pure, and I try to keep it that way. This is who I am, what I
feel. It seems as if bisexuality is a trend and I should whip up the masses.
Well, I don't believe in trends, I just believe in me. And I would be just as
happy with a new woman {as with a man}. I'm not complicated—I sing about
love in all its shapes, forms and colors." But mostly pink .. .
'While I don't think it's necessarily `cool' right now to be a dyke," concludes
one celebrity same-sex watcher, "lipstick lesbians such as Lindsay Lohan
{p. 40} do bring Sapphism into the mainstream and probably do encourage more
young women to consider trying it out."
So try this graphic Sapphic sell•abration out for sighs .. .
